If there is anything as unstable as the current economic state in Nigeria, it has to be the weather conditions in Lagos. One minute it’s so sunny, you wish you were locked up inside enjoying your air conditioner; the next minute it is raining so heavily, you wish for the sun because, at least, it allows you to go about with your daily business. Aside from affecting how smoothly your daily activities run, the weather condition also has an influence on property maintenance, affecting a property’s integrity, safety, and value. These are the different ways the different weather conditions could affect a property:
WET SEASONS
When you think of heavy rainfall in Lagos and buildings, the first thing that would most likely cross your mind would be the conditions of the roofs of these buildings. There have been a lot of reports of heavy rainstorms taking away an entire building or affecting a property with leaking roofs. Now, talking about outside the building, one would know how prone to flooding Lagos is, and this can cause a lot of structural issues with these buildings. After the wet season, property owners would have to deal with mold and mildew damaging walls and ceilings and pest infestations causing discomfort for those living on the property.
DRY SEASONS
Low humidity and high weather conditions can also lead to structural damage, causing cracking walls. And this goes alongside the problem of dust accumulation, which can be damaging to the finishes in the building. Dry seasons can also lead to more life-threatening issues, such as strain on electrical systems and fire hazards, in relation to dry vegetation around the property.

Property owners should do well to understand these challenges and work towards implementing these and many other preventive strategies to mitigate the effect of the weather on properties.
